WHat is turnout and what does it mean?
If you’ve spent any time around racehorses, you’ve probably heard the term “turnout”—but what does it actually mean, and why is it so important?
In this video, Joe Moran explains what turnout looks like for Thoroughbreds, when and why it’s used, and how this time away from the track plays a key role in a horse’s health, recovery, and long-term success.
Who is Joe Moran?
Joe Moran is part of the racing and bloodstock team at MyRacehorse, where he helps oversee the development, placement, and day-to-day management of the stable. Since joining the company in 2019, he’s been closely involved in everything from acquiring horses to working with trainers and making key decisions throughout a horse’s career.
Having grown up around the sport, Moran brings a hands-on, practical approach to the role. He spent time on the backside early on, working as a hotwalker and groom, and still stays closely connected to the horses by regularly checking in on their training and progress.
At MyRacehorse, he works alongside trainers, veterinarians, and farm teams across the country to map out racing plans and make sure each horse is given the time and placement it needs to develop properly. He is also involved in identifying new prospects at auction and helping shape the overall roster.
A key part of his role is bridging the gap between the barn and ownership, translating the day-to-day of racing into clear, straightforward updates so owners can stay connected to their horses and the process.
Known for his horse-first mindset and grounded perspective, Moran is part of the team behind MyRacehorse’s approach to making ownership more accessible while still prioritizing care, patience, and long-term success.
