What is a ridgling? Featuring dr. Jeff Berk VDM

If you’re reading this article, chances are you’ve come across the term ridgling—either in reference to your own horse or one you’re considering investing in. But what exactly does it mean? Is it something to be concerned about? And how might it affect a horse’s performance or value?

In the video below, Dr. Jeffery Berk breaks down what a ridgling is, how it’s diagnosed, whether it presents any limitations, and what (if any) treatment options are typically pursued.

Who is Dr. Berk?

Dr. Jeff Berk began his veterinary career as a racetrack practitioner before establishing a successful practice in Ocala, Florida. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, he has since built an extensive career in equine medicine, with a primary focus on international Thoroughbred sales work.

Dr. Berk currently resides and practices in Lexington, Kentucky with Equine Medical Associates. He has been deeply involved in the leadership of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), serving as President in 2019, as well as Treasurer on the Executive Committee, Chair of the AAEP Foundation Advisory Council, and most recently, Chair of both the Racing Committee and the Nominating Committee.

In addition to his veterinary work, Dr. Berk is an active participant in the Thoroughbred industry, with hands-on experience in purchasing, breeding, racing, and selling horses.
