What is a mare's gestation period?

If you’ve ever wondered how long it takes for a foal to make its way into the world, you’re not alone—this is one of the most common questions in the horse world.

In this video, we’re joined by Nicole Hammond of December Farm to break down a mare’s gestation period—how long horses are actually pregnant, why that timeline can vary, and what’s happening behind the scenes as a future racehorse develops before taking its very first steps.

Who is Nicole Hammond?

Nicole Hammond is a Thoroughbred horse farm owner and equine professional based in Kentucky, best known as the founder and principal of December Farm.

She runs a full-service breeding and boarding operation that focuses on foaling, raising young horses, and bloodstock services, essentially helping guide horses from birth through early development. In the Thoroughbred industry, farms like hers play a critical role in producing and caring for racehorses before they ever reach the track.

Hammond has been involved in the industry for years and is recognized for her hands-on work with mares and foals, including managing delicate foaling situations and early-stage care for young horses.

In short: she’s someone who operates behind the scenes of racing, raising the next generation of horses and ensuring they get the best possible start before their racing careers begin.
