weekend preview - quartet in queensland!

Saturday

pyrois - sunshine coast race 1 @ 12:23 AEST - barrier 2 - nikita beriman - 1200m

Pyrois heads back to the races following a short spell. He was last seen running 2nd on the Gold Coast poly track in mid-May. We’ve always thought that he is a better fresh horse, so the time between runs shouldn’t be a worry. He does step up to Saturday metro grade here, and we’re excited to see how he measures up to this level.

charming nic - sunshine coast race 4 @ 2:08pm AEST - barrier 13 - ash morgan - 1000m

Charming Nic also steps up in grade to a 3yo handicap over 1000m at Sunshine Coast. He was last seen running at Doomben in mid-June, and he was most unlucky on that occasion, never getting clear air and finishing only 2 lengths off the winner. I like the fact that he has drawn wide here, as he is a long-striding horse that benefits from being able to have clear running room. I expect that he will probably settle midfield, and we will be looking for him to be flying down the outside in the closing stages.

bear on the loose - sunshine coast race 8 @ 4:45pm AEST - barrier 1 - angela jones - 2400m

Bear On The Loose heads to the feature race on the card at Sunshine Coast on Saturday: The Listed Caloundra Cup over 2400m. He gets the in-form Angela Jones in the saddle, who is currently leading the QLD metro jockey premiership, and rode 3 winners on the Group 1 card at Eagle Farm last Saturday. He’s drawn barrier 1 here, which is absolutely perfect for his racing style. We know he will head to the front, but it is important that he doesn’t burn the candle too early, to ensure that he can see out the 2400m. If he can get a relatively easy lead, he should be very hard to beat here. He has been incredibly honest this preparation and this is his chance to go one better.

firebolt - gold coast race 7 @ 3:32pm aest - barrier 2 - brandon lerena - 1800m

Firebolt heads back to the Gold Coast for a BM65 over 1800m. She is over a month between runs, which makes me think that she will need this run for her fitness. She has been going only fairly in her last few starts, so I’m not expecting records to be broken here, but hoping for an encouraging run where she is hitting the line strongly.

karasmatic - wangaratta race 2 @ 11:36am aest - barrier 9 - koby jennings - 1300m

Here is Karasmatic’s chance to break the maiden… 3rd time lucky this preparation! He unfortunately just found one better last start, although he didn’t help himself with his racing manners, hence the reason he is staying at the 1300m here. If he can settle during the run, I expect him to be winning, and winning well, despite the fact that the 1300m is an unsuitable trip for this son of Vadamos.
