weekend preview - Willydoit avondale awaits

Couple big chances this week, Spence is backing in the boys this week!

Saturday

Willydoit - Ellerslie Race 5 Avondale Guineas

  • Willy is back! He heads to Ellerslie for the Avondale Guineas over 2100m. This horse is in of the most prominent lead up runs to the Derby, with 7 of the last 12 Avondale Guineas winners going on to win the NZ Derby. His win over Tuxedo reads perfectly for this race, given that a lot of horses in this field have been beaten by that galloper. He’s drawn a little bit sticky in barrier 12, so Masa will have to be tactical with where he places the horse in transit. With even luck, I think he should be winning again.

Sunday

Charcoals - Ballarat Race 7

  • Charcoals is back to the races off his win at Seymour…. finally! Billy Egan sticks with this galloper as he tackles a BM64 over 1000m. He’s drawn the very outside which isn’t ideal, however the 1000m at Ballarat is a chute start, so there’s essentially only one bend before the straight. The tempo will be very hot with Speir being a speed machine. I’m a little bit worried about a manic tempo being a negative for Charcoals, especially given his gap between runs, however, the horse is in great order and if he gets luck in running he should go very close.
