Rosehill Race 2: Katsumi Orochi (7) - Tommy berry
There is still no certainty whether this son of Maurice will take his place on Saturday, however, if he does, he will be very exciting to watch. The Baillieu is a historically successful race for 2yos to race in, and then excel as 3yo’s. For example, Linebacker won this race as a 2yo, and is now a Group 1 winner at 3.
The race has a lot of talent in it, with Quietly Arrogant backing up out of a Slipper, Nepotism and Tupakara coming from the right formlines and obviously our boy, Katsumi Orochi. He comes from the superior Melbourne 2yo form lines, finishing 3rd to Devil Night and Field of Play in the Blue Diamond Prelude, which produced the Blue Diamond Winner (Devil Night). Anything that Katsumi does in his 2yo preparation is a bonus, so I just want to see him run well and show us the ability that he so clearly possesses.
I couldn’t have any confidence in his finishing position, purely because of the weather and whether he is completely screwed down to win over 1400m, given that his recent trial was only over 792m. We will watch and learn for now.

Rosehill Race 4: Just Fine (7) - Tim Clark
Jerry returns to the races 2nd up to contest the Neville Selwood Stakes. He goes up in distance to 2000m and will certainly appreciate the Rosehill rail being out 5m. Rosehill can occasionally be quite a leader biased track, and Jerry only knows one way.
The top weight, Ceolwulf, is a genuine star and is rightfully in the red figures. He backs up after a very slowly run 1500m George Ryder, where he finished 3rd and basically did no work. Just Fine is a little bit unknown on very wet ground, however, he has enjoyed tracks in the soft range before, which is proven by his Bart Cummings win on a Soft 6.
A question always has to be asked when Just Fine runs… Which Just Fine will we see? For that reason, I just want to watch him on Saturday.
Wyong Race 6: Neptunite (9) - jean van overmeire
Patience is a virtue! How good is it to see this son of Shamus Ward finally get to the races? It has been a long time coming, however, based on his trials, I think he is ready to go. The 1350m is a slight query, as I think he will relish trips over 2000m+. However, he should still give us enough of a sight over this unsuitable trip.
It’s worth noting that every other horse in this field has race experience, which is a slight concern for Neptunite. However, looking through the form, a lot of the horses were largely uncompetitive in their most recent start, so we might’ve found a weak enough race for Neptunite to sneak into the Top 4.

Gold Coast Race 5: Firebolt (4) - Brandon lerena
Firebolt heads up in trip after her gutsy victory last start over 1800m in slightly lesser grade. I feel as if her last start has given her the confidence that she needs to go on with it here.
She’s drawn perfectly in barrier 4, and should be able to find a nice position in the first couple. She needs the race tempo to suit, as she doesn’t have the sharpest turn of foot, but if she can get a race run at a genuine tempo, she can go close. I think she will handle the 2200m, but purely from an unknown perspective, I’m conservatively hoping for a top 4 finish.

Gold Coast Race 7: Pyrois (9) - Brendon lerena
Pyrois is another horse that is coming off a win in lesser grade. He settled last in a fast run 1200m contest last start and flew down the outside to score rather impressively. His last 600m figure was quicker than anything else on the night, which encourages me here. He will likely get back again, so if there is genuine speed, I could see him attempting to replicate the run. He’s had a few weeks between runs which is a positive because he is more effective as a fresh horse. As long as he’s not too far back, I can see him as a genuine Top 3 chance.

Sale Race 7: Exuma (8) - Steph hateley
Exuma heads back to the races following a bit of mucus after Moonee Valley. He comes to a very competitive BM64 over 1000m with a number of exciting, lightly raced gallopers in the field.
He gets a nice weight relief with Steph Hateley on, and he should be able to give a sight as a likely leader. I’m scared of former Hong Kong galloper, Kyle, who is the top weight, and the lightly raced Albertville, who was super impressive winning a maiden in February. If Steoh can get some cheap sectionals during the mid stages, I can see him being competitive here.
