weekend preview - bur dubai aus debut

This is a moment that thousands of MyRacehorse faithful have been waiting for, the much-anticipated Australian debut for Bur Dubai.

friday

Vermillion Dragon Race 4 - Canterbury - BM64 over 1900m @ 7:30pm AEDT

  • Vermillion Dragon has travelled up to NSW since his last start at Seymour. He was last seen running 7th in a BM64 over 1600m, however, the run was a very encouraging improvement from his first up run. He settled towards the rear of the field, traveled smoothly and hit the line strongly to only be defeated by 3 lengths. He rattled home in the 2nd quickest last 1000m, and 3rd quickest 800, 600 and 400m sectionals respectively.
  •
  • He now gets to 1900m, which is a huge positive. Another positive is that he gets to race clockwise again. Last time we saw him race in this direction was his maiden victory at Kembla Grange, where we saw him dominate that field and come away with a 3.3 length victory. Jason Collett was aboard VD that day, and he is back to ride him again tomorrow. We expect him to be knocking on the door of a peak performance, and I think that his current price is over the odds.

Bur Dubai Race 1 - Caulfield - BM74 over 1600m @ 12:15pm AEDT

  • This is a moment that thousands of MyRacehorse faithful have been waiting for, the much-anticipated Australian debut for Bur Dubai. He comes to this race off 2 strong trials over 1200m and 1500m. He looked like a true stayer in those trials; he relaxed really well, yet still showed a nice cruising speed to keep up with the opposition.

  •
  • He was last seen at the races back in late June, where he absolutely obliterated a field at Chester, winning by 9.5 lengths over 2514m. That race has produced 4 subsequent winners, and shows the true staying talent that this galloper possesses. With that in mind, this race is over 1600m, which is well short of his best. However, he does have some experience over a mile. In 2023, Bur Dubai’s first ever start, he raced over 1609m and finished 3rd to Grey Charger, who is now stakes performed over a mile. Bur Dubai was still a colt then, and we’ve all seen him now as a gelding; he is simply a better horse.

  •
  • Barrier 1 will be a little tricky, however if he can get clear galloping room and tempo to suit, he may just go and run a cheeky race for us.

Messina Race 4 - Ascot - 2yo Plate over 1000m @ 4:39pm AEDT

  • Messina heads back to the races this weekend for a 2yo dash over 1000m. Whilst she was disappointing on debut over 1200m, there are a number of factors that must be considered when looking at this run. 1. It was her first start. 2. She raced very keen, especially early. 3. She was coming off only one trial, and it was over 400m. These three elements completely draw a line through her debut. She now goes back to 1000m and has had a few weeks of solid training to get her ready for this.

  •
  • Only 4 horses of the 10 in the field have race experience, which cannot be underestimated as an advantage for this filly. The engagement of senior jockey Chris Parnham cannot be taken lightly either.

  •
  • Simon Miller’s plan is clear; Ride her cold and let her peel out and storm home when the time is right. I expect to see a big improvement from her first start.
