Weekend Review

tochka and wonder kid

Just the two runners from the weekend to review, however, two solid runs and plenty to look forward to this week.

FRIDAY - tochka - 2nd - cranbourne bm64 over 1000m

Tochka ran super on Friday night. She finished 2nd, beaten 0.75L, but was massive in defeat. She didn’t break away from the barrier very cleanly, which meant that Daniel Stackhouse had to use a bit of Tochka’s energy to get to the front. Once she got there, she relaxed well and looked to control the race.

At the top of the straight, she gave a good kick and held a small margin on Skipjack, who was closing in quickly. Approaching the last 100m, she probably was just found out late. A combination of the shaky start and being one month between runs, probably resulted in her getting run over late. She looks to be in great order and another win this preparation is not far away.

saturday - wonder kid - 8th - bendigo bm74 over 1600m

Wonder Kid had his first start on Australian soil on Saturday over a very unsuitable 1600m. We wanted to see a few staying traits within the run, and that’s exactly what we got. He settled near the rear of the field and just went through his gears nicely, hitting the line in 8th place.

It would’ve been great seeing him savage the line a bit better, however, with a closer look at the pattern of the day, it was hard to make ground there. 7 of the 10 races at Bendigo were won by horses settling in the first 3 in transit, which definitely didn’t help the cause.

Nonetheless, he will take great benefit from that first run and the stable will look to step him up in his distance at his next start.
