Weekend Review
After the incredible win of Willydoit last weekend, the momentum has absolutely flourished through the MyRacehorse stable, with 3 winners from 4 runners over the weekend.

Tochka Holds on at Kilmore - 1st by 0.46L
It was a great return to form for Tochka on Friday after a luckless first up run in February. Linda Meech rode this filly to perfection, getting her out fast from the barriers to be able to control the race from the lead. There wasn’t a great deal of pressure during the mid stages, meaning that she was able to maintain a 1 length lead for the majority of the race. She was then able to skip away from rivals and get them chasing earlier than they probably wanted to. She seems to enjoy races that are run at genuine tempos, where she can beat key rivals for early speed and then control the race. This was backed up by the sectionals, where the race ran 2.04L quicker than standard time and was the 2nd quickest of 3 1112m races on the day, which included being quicker than La Meeting’s win the race prior, who won by 3.5 lengths.
All in all, it was great to see her win again and she certainly has some untapped ability, especially over the shorter course trips.
Saturday
Just Fine Returns in Good Order - 9th, beaten 4.4L
We knew going into the Ajax Stakes that the 1500m was going to prove a little sharp for Just Fine, but I thought his 9th placing certainly had a lot of merit, and holds him in good stead for this preparation when he gets out to a suitable trip.
He is all too familiar with being a horse that likes to lead, however, given the early speed in this race, he wasn’t able to match the early motors of horses such as Iowna Merc and Willaidow, who are horses that race consistently between 1200-1500m. He ended up settling in a forward-midfield position and was crossed by Willaidow, who was sitting 3 wide with no cover. This resulted in a small halt to Just Fine’s momentum, which isn’t ideal for a big staying horse who likes to bowl along. Whilst it was only a minor check, it still probably played a small role in the final finishing margin.
The end of the 1500m probably just found him out late against sharper horses, however, it was definitely an encouraging first up run for Jerry.
Sunday
Charming Nic Absolutely Demolishes Them - 1st by 7L
What a dominant display from Charming Nic. There’s always a few extra nerves that tend to kick in when your horse jumps at $1.45, however, he certainly lived up to that market expectation. Harry Coffey put him in a perfect position, 1-out-1-back, and he looked the winner at the top of the straight. He cruised up to the leaders under no riding and was able to show a devastating turn of foot to win the race by 7 lengths. The race time of 1:16.15 was almost 1 second quicker than the other 1300m maiden on the day, and also quicker than the 0-58 1300m race later in the day, which adds more merit to the performance.
The other thing worth mentioning is that Harry Coffey thought that he still showed signs of doing things wrong, which means that we can expect even more improvement to come once he works things out fully. Overall, there was plenty to like about his display on Sunday.
Firebolt Returns to the Winners Circle - 1st by 0.1L
It was great to see Firebolt return to form at Sunshine Coast on Sunday. Her first two runs this preparation were disappointing and she was getting herself into positions that were impossible to win from. Sunday was a different story. Michael Rodd was able to get her out of the gates cleanly for the first time this preparation, meaning that she was able to settle in a more forward position, which was extremely beneficial. She had the fitness grounding to run out the 1800m, so being more positive on quite a genuine speed allowed her to grind away at her opposition to finish 1st in a head-bobber with Atlantic Royal.
She has now somewhat silenced the critics who believed she couldn’t perform on turf and hopefully she can go on with the job from here.
