Spring Spotlight
Wootton Basset finished second in the first season sires table and fourth in the overall 2-year-old sires table for the 2024/25 racing season, illustrating his global dominance as a sire in both the northern and southern hemispheres. To make sure we didn’t miss out on the fun, our bloodstock team made sure to introduce his progeny into the MyRacehorse stable. Introducing: The Hound.
The wootton Bassett effect
Wootton Bassett is one of Europe’s, if not the world’s, most sought-after stallions, commanding a service fee of 370,000 Euros. His stock are renowned for their toughness, soundness and ability to improve with age, which is a promising sign considering his dominance as a 2-year-old sire in his first season down under.
Longevity is what sticks out. Crucially, his progeny are not just sharp two-year-olds, but tend to build into their frames and peak at three or four, sustaining performances at group level. The Hound will give owners the opportunity to be a part of multiple seasons of quality racing.
Nice looks with the type to match
It’s unlikely that The Hound will reach the races pre-Christmas, a sign that tends to have more positives than negatives. He was a lovely athletic type when he presented at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, and the extra time that he will have to develop and strengthen into his frame will only benefit him throughout the latter half of his 2-year-old and into his 3-year-old season.
Michael Freedman highlights that this colt already has the mentality of a seasoned five-year-old gelding. A rare quality that will help him through the early education process and give him the constitution to come back stronger after each reparation.
Wootton Bassett’s progeny thrive after their first preparation, coming along beautifully when they come back into work for their next preparation, and we cannot wait to see The Hound follow suit.
A perfect blend of speed and stamina
The Hound hails from a great family, his dam, Tessneem, was a $1.4 million purchase by the great Lonhro, and injects speed into his bloodline, whilst he holds onto elite European stallion power through his sire.
It was no surprise that his speed gene pegged him as ideally suited between 1200m and 1600m, the ideal distances to enjoy the riches of Australian Prizemoney.
Backed by Wootton Bassett’s global reputation and with the benefit of Michael’s methodical build-up, he has every chance to become the style of horse that not only earns his owners strong racetrack returns, but if he finds himself in the right races, a possible stallion prospect!
