MyRacehorse acquired Malibu Mayhem for $140,000 at the OBS April Sale in 2021. The colt skipped over the track in a quick 1:0 1/5 at the under-tack show and appeared to our racing team to possess the versatility to handle all surfaces as his pedigree also suggested.
Unfortunately, the son of Malibu Moon was pulled up nearing the finish line in his third and final start at Santa Anita, and was later found to have suffered fractures in both his sesamoid bones in his left front fetlock. Following a very successful surgery, MyRacehorse made the decision to responsibly retire our young colt.
We were incredibly thankful to be able to place Malibu Mayhem in his new home at the Echo Canyon Equine Foundation. The Echo Canyon Equine Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to Thoroughbred aftercare and sanctuary. They operate a private facility, located in the horse-friendly town of Cave Creek, AZ.
Their facility is located within 15 minutes of two of the best equine surgeons in the state of Arizona. All of Echo Canyon’s veterinary partners uphold their specialized standard of care, to help assure their horses’ rehabilitation best prepares them for a second career. Most importantly, they also offer permanent sanctuary for horses requiring advanced medical care and will always provide a home for horses they have previously placed.
Given the severity of Malibu Mayhem’s injuries, he was a prime candidate for their permanent sanctuary. While he had been in stable condition and handled his entire rehabilitation process extremely well, the care needed for him still was above the norm. With the help of Jeanne Schnell, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Liaison at Santa Anita, we were able to find Malibu Mayhem the perfect next home.
He arrived at Echo Canyon in great order and settled in well according to Farm Director Claudia Schalk. We are incredibly grateful to our aftercare partners that look after our retired equine athletes and love to see his updates on the Echo Canyon Facebook Page.

We are happy to report Malibu Mayhem has continued to thrive at Echo Canyon Equine Foundation. They even planned to restart “Mayhem,” as they call him now that he’s had adequate time to heal.
When asked about potential rehoming plans, they stated, “We currently do not have plans to adopt him out unless it is to an extremely equine savvy home. He requires long-term corrective shoeing to assure he remains comfortable. We are grateful we had the opportunity to rehabilitate Mayhem.”
