Introducing:
Every so often, a colt comes along that carries both the pedigree and the physical presence to capture the imagination. Maximus Meridius, a rising two-year-old by champion Japanese stallion Satono Aladdin, is one such horse. Out of the mare Caserta, who has already produced the Group 1 star War Machine, he arrives with a family background that demands attention. His name, inspired by Russell Crowe’s character in Gladiator, reflects both strength and presence, and as a half-brother to War Machine, he has already set high expectations before he steps onto the track.
The Freedman Factor
This exciting colt will join the Randwick stable of Michael Freedman, the reigning Golden Slipper-winning trainer who also prepares MyRacehorse talents Ninja and Apocalyptic. For Freedman, pedigree alone is not enough, he judges each horse on type and ability, and he has been quick to praise Maximus Meridius for his athleticism, lightness on his feet, and his smooth, fluid action. While he is not expected to be an early two-year-old, he is the kind who will develop powerfully through his late juvenile season and excel as a three-year-old when stamina and scope begin to matter most. Freedman has no doubt he will furnish into a colt capable of competing in Guineas and Derby races, with the long-term ambition of open-age Group 1 competition.
Securing the Colt
The colt’s path to MyRacehorse has been as intriguing as his pedigree. Initially catalogued for the prestigious Inglis Easter Sale, he was withdrawn to give him more time to grow, a decision that proved astute. With War Machine announcing himself as one of the most promising gallopers coming out of the Autumn Carnival and other half-siblings such as Vanvitelli making waves in Australia, the colt quickly became a horse on the radar of many. When the opportunity arose, MyRacehorse acted decisively to secure him before he reached the open market. The breeder, impressed enough to retain a 40% share, provided an added endorsement of his quality and potential.
Current Status
Currently spelling in New Zealand, Maximus Meridius has already been broken in and educated through the early stages of his preparation. Standing at sixteen and a half hands, he presents as a rangy and athletic individual with the scope to develop into a powerful racehorse in the mould of Willydoit, another New Zealand import who is sure to impress under Australian training conditions. His time in the paddock will give him the chance to grow further before he makes the trip across the Tasman to commence training at Randwick.
Pedigree Insights
His pedigree is one that excites on every level. Satono Aladdin, the only Group 1-winning son of Deep Impact at stud in New Zealand, has quickly established himself as a stallion of rare quality, producing performers such as Oaks heroine Pennyweka, Firestorm, Lantern Way, Tokyo Tycoon and Sacred Satono. His progeny have earned him the highest strike rate of stakes winners in the Southern Hemisphere, a remarkable achievement that has put him ahead of local sires of immense reputation. Caserta, meanwhile, has proven herself as a broodmare of substance, with all five of her foals to race emerging as winners, none better than War Machine, the Stradbroke winner who has amassed more than $2.4 million in prizemoney. Her daughters and sons are now beginning to make their own mark, ensuring that this is a family line firmly on the rise.
Taken together, the athletic profile, the international bloodlines, and the confidence shown by both breeder and trainer all point to Maximus Meridius being a colt of serious potential. He may not announce himself as an early juvenile star, but patience will be rewarded. With the right preparation, he has every chance to follow his half-brother into Group 1 company and perhaps, one day, become a stallion prospect in his own right. In name and in nature, Maximus Meridius has the makings of a warrior destined for the big stage.
