Squared Straight Ownership Sold

MyRacehorse has sold our 30% minority ownership in Squared Straight. Current trainer/caretaker Jonathan Wong has purchased MyRacehorse’s 30% ownership and the horse will remain in his care. The consideration for the sale was that Jonathan assumes responsibility for Squared Straight’s training and care costs.

Unfortunately, there are not many palatable offers for a horse of Squared Straight’s running ability and the majority owners of the horse have made the decision to not drop him into claiming races.

Accordingly, we felt this was a fair offer to close the series.

Squared Straight has not demonstrated the ability to generate sufficient earnings to cover his training expenses regardless of the level of racing at which he competed. As a result, the Squared Straight reserve account is currently over negative $25,000; practically resulting in the inability for this series to return any capital moving forward based on his low earnings potential.

Squared Straight has been given ample opportunities at different class levels, distances and surfaces but simply has not been able to get over the maiden hump. While the horse remains sound, for him to be successful, he will likely need to remain at circuits like Turf Paradise or Golden Gate and run at the lower-to-mid levels with lower purse amounts.

Squared Straight has a lot of meaning to the MyRacehorse team, being a full brother to our first ever winner, Takeo Squared, and made this decision that much tougher. While we were hopeful that Squared Straight would follow in his brother’s footsteps, as is often the case in the racing game, it’s very difficult to duplicate.

Now that Squared Straight has been sold, we will begin the process of reconciling and closing the Squared Straight series account. Account closure will be finalized in approximately 60 days. Since at the time of Squared Straight’s last race the reserve account was negative $24,735.59, as a result there will not be any final distributions. Under MyRacehorse’s one-time payment model, any negative amounts remaining in the account at time of closure are covered by MRH.

Race Recap

Squared Straight finished third in yesterday’s 5th race at Turf Paradise. The gelding was never able to get a comfortable trip as he chased the early leaders and was stuck three wide down the backstretch. Turning for home, Squared Straight still had every opportunity to kick on but was simply not able to quicken.

Though Squared Straight was beaten only one length in the end, based on his California form and having a run over the Turf Paradise surface, all parties were expecting a winning effort yesterday.

Squared Straight Update & Entry

Squared Straight has remained at Turf Paradise under the care of Jonathan Wong since his 3rd place. The partnership of MyRacehorse, Pappas Horse Racing Corp, Lyle Egan, and Ron Thayer agreed to give the gelding one more shot at Turf Paradise.

Squared Straight Race Recap

Squared Straight ran an even third in today’s finale at Turf Paradise. The 4-year-old gelding broke quickly and set the early tempo under Scott Stevens. Longshot, Lasten Impression, kept constant pressure outside of Squared Straight down the backside, never letting him get the lead on his own. As they turned for home, Squared Straight drifted out and finished up with a mild bid down the stretch.

While Squared Straight was only beaten less than two lengths, we were expecting a winning performance against today’s field.

We will be huddling up with trainer Doug O’Neill and partners in the coming days to determine what is next for Squared Straight.

Workout Report

Due to the expected race date for Squared Straight being pushed back a week, the gelding had an easy 3/8th’s breeze over the main track at Turf Paradise this morning. Squared Straight covered 3 furlongs in 36 seconds flat, working by himself. Jonathan Wong, who oversaw the work, reported everything went well. Wong has handled Squared Straight previously when the gelding shipped up to Golden Gate last May, so he is familiar with him. Trainer Doug O’Neill instructed Wong he did not need to do too much with him this morning and to let him gallop out on his own.

All set for next Tuesday!

Race Entry

Squared Straight has been re-entered in Tuesday’s (Feb 2nd) 9th race at Turf Paradise. A Maiden Optional Claiming $30,000 for four-year-olds and upward going seven and one-half furlongs on the turf course. The rails will be set at 21 feet. Squared Straight will not be eligible to be claimed out of this race.

Squared Straight drew post number 3 with top jockey Scott Stevens aboard.  Post time is 3:14 pm PT.

Please note, due to the timeliness of licensing for the entire ownership and trainer of Squared Straight, the gelding will run under trainer Jonathan Wong’s name, who Doug uses when shipping horses.
