Big Mel worked three quarters (6 furlongs) in 1:14.4 this morning at Los Alamitos. He worked in company this week with Mickelson, a three year old colt by Tale of the Cat. Assistant trainer Mike Marlow reported Big Mel looked good out there this morning and is doing well. He has put in back to back nice works according to Mike. The only thing we need now is a race. We are hoping to see an extra written on one of the coming overnights.
Julie Stack reported Annahilate was showing signs of colic and had to be sent to the Chino Valley Clinic. Chino Valley Clinic reports Annahilate is in good spirits at the moment but was displaying some discomfort when he first arrived. Annahilate was immediately given fluids and medication, thankfully responding very well to them. The positive news is Annahilate did pass manure which is crucial when dealing with a colic scare. He is expected to remain at Chino Valley Clinic for approx. 3-4 days to monitor his vitals and make sure he is not displaying any additional symptoms.
The tough news is sending a horse to the clinic or hospital is not cheap. We are expecting a 3,000 – $4,000 bill due to this, which will eat up any remaining reserves we have. Our staff will be in contact with Chino Valley Clinic daily and will provide updates on Annihilate accordingly. If all goes well he will return to Julie Stack’s farm early next week.
As we reported earlier this week, trainer Todd Pletcher plans on working Mo Mischief on the turf this Sunday in Saratoga. How the colt handles the turf will help determine if that surface is an option for him in the future. We’ll issue an update following the work.
Lady Valentine will work Sunday in Saratoga from the gate and will be equipped with blinkers. Her works have been average so far and trainer Todd Pletcher is hoping to see some improvement as she graduates to a gate work with the addition of blinkers. We’ll issue a report following the work.

We checked in with assistant trainer Mike Marlow this morning, Shared Empire will now be working on Wednesday. She is in good order, but had a minor superficial cut on one of her back legs this morning. Mike reported this is nothing major, and she likely scraped it in her the stall last night. He will give it a few days before working her back.
Power Up Paynter was in good spirits today, following the removal of a skin growth from his flank on Tuesday. According to his groom, Alberto, the gelding hasn’t missed an oat since his outpatient procedure.
