'This is the most exciting horse we've bought' - Michael Kent Jnr.
“He’s extremely versatile, he’s won by big margins on good and firm ground, and absolutely loves soft ground as we saw in his most recent 7 length win.” – Michael Kent Jnr, Trainer
Introducing Wonder Kid! An exciting 3YO UK galloper who has been smashing his rivals in the UK. From 5 career starts as a gelding, he has won by an average margin of more than 5 lengths. With each of his dominant wins coming over a distance of 2,400 meters. What we’re looking at here is a Cups contender for 2025, Wonder Kid is a young horse with great scope. And for those who are wanting another Just Fine, Bur Dubai and Bear On The Loose, then Wonder Kid could be the boy for you.
Wonder Kid will land in Australia in the coming months and look to get to the races early 2025. We’ve paired up with the same stable behind Our Sassy Lady and Bur Dubai – Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr
“He’s won 3 races over 2400m very impressively by big margins. He has great vets, good bone and should adapt well to Australian Racing” – Michael Kent Jnr, Trainer.
He returned gelded as a 3YO at Newbury first up over 2400m on the 13th of June, winning dominantly by 4.34 lengths. You can watch his replay here
“As a 2YO colt he was given 3 runs, he was then gelded and has exploded as a 3YO winning 3 races from 5 starts, and one close second” – Michael Kent Jnr, Trainer
“Just 8 days after his first up win, he reappears and wins very impressively by a widening margin” – Michael Kent Jnr, Trainer.
You can view a replay of this win at Newmarket on the 21st of July 2024, where Wonder Kid was again dominant by 3.5 lengths – click here
“On September 26 at Newmarket, the first time he found soft ground and he absolutely bolts in. He won by over 7 lengths with 14 lengths back to third.” – Michael Kent Jnr, Trainer.
Wonder Kid heralds from a fantastic stallion line, sired by multiple Group One winner Belardo. Belardo made history as a two-year-old, winning the prestigious G1 Dewhurst Stakes and being crowned Champion 2YO of Europe in 2014. He continued to shine at four, winning the G1 Lockinge Stakes and defeating eight G1 performers. Belardo retired with a Timeform rating of 126, solidifying his place as a top racehorse. He was crowned champion NZ first season sire in the 2020/21 racing season.
Belardo's sire, Lope de Vega, is a successful stallion in the Southern Hemisphere, with 5-time G1 winner Santa Ana Lane being one of his standout offspring.
Further from Michael Kent Jnr
After a 2yo campaign aimed mainly at getting him handicapped (horses are given a handicap rating after 3 runs in the UK), he was gelded, given a break, and then taken directly to a more suitable distance as a 3yo which is when we should start judging his true form.
What's most exciting about this immature stayer is that his last win was his most impressive yet and he is clearly still on an UPWARD SPIRAL.
He displays a terrific turn of foot at the end of 2400m, has a beautiful clean stride and really covers the ground, he can handle dry or heavy tracks, and looks like he will relish even further than 2400m when asked the question.
Physically, he presents as a big, raw horse (16.1 and a 1/2hh / 490kg) that still has a lot of furnishing to do so he will only keep improving on the track as he fills into his big frame.
Wonder Kid's sire BELARDO is also noted for producing horses who get better with age, just like our very own Golden Path - who has gone to a new level as a 5yo and is still getting better with every run he has! This Saturday Golden Path is a LIVE chance in the $2,000,000 Group 2 Hill Stakes.
On what Wonder Kid has shown so far, he is already capable of Stakes Racing here in Australia, but there is so much to suggest his best is all ahead of him. With that in mind, we think the upcoming Sydney and Brisbane Carnivals/Cups are realistic aims in the short term and we hope one day he might develop into a Major Cups Contender!
The prize money on offer in Australia right now is simply incredible - and with a lack of homebred staying talent - it is these imports who really come to the fore..
Just last Saturday we saw Land Legend (FR) win the G1 Metropolitan, Just Fine (IRE) win the G3 Bart Cummings and Via Sistina (IRE) and Buckaroo (GB) Quinella the G1 Turnbull!
The Sire – Belardo
The Dam – Petits Potins
